If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that sometimes I get really stubborn about doing certain things the “right way”. And there is also a time and a place for shortcut recipes and quick meals.

The Best Ever Chocolate Cake With Whipped Dark Chocolate Ganache

Then there are recipes like this chocolate cake that tick all the boxes – it’s easier than I’ve made everyday cake for most of my life, and the results are

You will love how it really tastes of chocolate, even if it was made with only cocoa powder (the secret is to add boiling water – it makes the chocolate flavor “bloom”).

You’ll love how the cake can stand alone so you can just dust it with icing sugar and then serve slices with baby cream on the side. Although of course covering it with frosting never hurts….

This is the famous Hershey’s Chocolate Cake recipe that I tried on the recommendation of Michelle from Brown Eyed Baker (one of the first places I look for baked goods). I tried it without massively high expectations because I thought “how much better can this be than the usual, such a simple recipe?”

I love being proven wrong when it comes to food. So wrong in fact, that even though I showered with the recipe a few times, I landed right back where I started using the recipe exactly as written.

I really think this is the only recipe on my entire website that I publish from another source without changing the ingredients at all. It’s unbelievable! But for me it’s perfect as it is. I can’t see myself using another recipe for a daily chocolate cake, ever again.

It is amazingly quick to make the batter, with all the ingredients mixed in a bowl with a whisk.

There is no need to cream butter like the usual recipes, because this is made with oil, which is the reason why this cake is wonderfully moist. No more dry chocolate cake! 🙌🏻 (Also means this is more forgiving than most if they once accidentally left it in the oven for 15 minutes longer than necessary and it still wasn’t dry).

Mini Chocolate Cake Recipe: The Perfect Date Night Dessert

I am publishing this recipe as part of the Easter recipes posted yesterday! So here it is, rolled up for Easter. The same cake in the photos above, the same frosting, topped with bacon Easter eggs, babies (both from Woolworths in Australia), and a chocolate basket. I provided instructions on how to make the chocolate basket in the recipe notes (hint – it involves a balloon…).

Easter aside, I call this my everyday chocolate cake because it’s just that – my new favorite to make for any occasion. There are times that call for a mud cake like fudge cake made with cocoa powder and melted chocolate. There are times that call for intense dark chocolate cakes. There are times you need/want the nutty brownie-like flourless chocolate cake. And there are times when you want something light as air, a delicate chiffon cake.

This is for all those other times when you just want a great, classic chocolate cake. Which in my world is 80% of the time!

Chocolate Strawberry Celebration Cake Recipe: How To Make It

Recipe VIDEO above. This is the everyday chocolate cake that I make over and over again. The crumb is soft and moist, it really tastes like chocolate (rare than you think!) and you only need a bowl and a whisk. It’s the famous Hershey’s “Perfectly Chocolate” cake, one of the few recipes I’ve used from another source without changing the ingredients at all (yes it’s perfect!)

1. Sugar – I use caster/superfine out of habit for all baking recipes, but regular is also ok.

2. Regular cocoa powder works well here, but Dutch processing gives it a slightly more intense chocolate flavor. I use regularly for this cake.

3. SPRINGFORM PAN (important): Even the best ones are not 100% leakproof, so with very thin batters like this cake, you will get a small leak. The best way to combat this is to “stick” the space where the sides meet the base with butter, and put a tray at the bottom of the oven to catch drips (do not put cake pans on the tray, it affects the heat circulation ).

Fudgy Chocolate Loaf Cake

Quick way to make cake pan liner for base: Take a piece of baking paper and fold in half, then quarters, then fold further so it’s a small long triangle. Line up the pointed end with the center of the cake pan, then cut the end off at the edge of the cake pan. Unfold and voila! An almost perfect round cake pan liner that fits your pan perfectly!

4. BAKING / RACKS – If your oven is large enough to fit both cake pans on one shelf, place the rack in the middle of the oven. If it’s not big enough, put one shelf 1/3 of the way down into the oven, then the next shelf below (check that the cake pan fits). If cakes are on separate shelves, remove the top one at 35 minutes per recipe, then move the bottom one up onto the top shelf and bake for another 5 minutes.

5. I turn the cakes upside down so that the flat base becomes the surface used for frosting. Flat surface just looks prettier when you cut into the cake! This cake comes out pretty level, but if you want to be extra neat, feel free to level the cake with a serrated knife.

6. EASTER DECORATIONS as pictured in the Easter Recipes post: baby chicks $2, speckled chocolate eggs and shredded paper all from Woolies. Chocolate basket made as follows: blow up the balloon to the size you want the basket to be, place with tied end in a rice bowl or something that fits. Melt baking chocolate in microwave (about 1/2 cup chips/buttons), then transfer to small ziplock bag. Snip corner, then pipe chocolate over the exposed half of the balloon. Let sit in the fridge, then carefully release the air from the balloon. Voila! Chocolate basket! Fill with shredded paper, eggs and chickpeas. (PS. Looking for a non-choc cake? Try this pastel blue Easter cake, also charmingly topped with Easter eggs)!

7. STORAGE: Keeps in an airtight container for up to 5 days and is still nice and moist. Fridge if frosted and it’s very hot where you are. Freezing is not ideal as it is such a moist cake that it makes the batter a bit wet so it still looks like cake, when you eat it the texture is almost like chocolate pudding cake. Still tasty, just not as cakey as it should be.

8. Different countries, different measures – This recipe will work with cup measures whether you are in Australia, US, Canada or anywhere else in the world (except Japan, please use weights provided).

Measuring cup sizes in the US and Canada are slightly different than the rest of the world, including Australia. While for most recipes the difference isn’t enough to affect the outcome of the recipe, for baking recipes it can mean the difference between success or an epic fail. US Cup to make sure it works for both. Usually it’s good, like this chocolate cake (either the recipe has enough flex and/or the difference is relative to the ingredients). If not, I provide ingredient measurements for different countries (like these Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies).

I believe you can make great meals with everyday ingredients, even if you are short on time and cost conscious. You just have to cook cleverly and be creative! Ina Garten’s chocolate cake recipe ~ it’s a classic! When I hear the word dessert, this creamy, rich chocolate cake is what comes to mind. Everyone should do it at least once.

It will take a lot for me to look for another chocolate cake recipe in the near future. The texture and flavor of Ina Garten’s chocolate cake is just my style – it’s very moist without being dense or heavy, and has just the right balance of sweetness with rich chocolate flavor. I can see why this is a popular recipe, and will be my go-to from now on.

The chocolate cake itself is similar to my chocolate cake with cranberry buttercream, but also a little easier to put together than it
