Appetizer Recipes Valentine’s Day – Welcome to the Taste Creations blog! On the first Monday of every month, I get together with my blogger friends to share recipes based on a specific theme or ingredient. Today we planned a Valentine’s dinner! Each blogger in our group prepared a dish for a Valentine’s Day multi-course meal. A great Valentine’s Day meal starts with a sweet and delicious appetizer, and that’s the part of the meal I made!
I love caprese salads, so I decided to make an extra sweet Valentine’s day caprese salad for my dish. Caprese salad is a classic Italian combination of fresh basil, mozzarella cheese and tomato. The salad contains the colors of the tricolor of the Italian flag – green, white and red. The salad is often topped with a glaze or balsamic vinegar dressing. Yummy! The best part of Valentine’s caprese salad is the heart-shaped slices of mozzarella cheese.

The key to this salad is to buy the freshest ingredients you can get your hands on. I bought some tomato on the vine, a ball of Italian mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, and the best balsamic dressing I could find.

The way to make this salad is to know the size of a heart-shaped cookie cutter before going to the grocery store. Your cheese ball needs to be at least as wide as the widest part of the heart-shaped cookie cutter.
Mozzarella hearts are made by cutting a mozzarella ball into equal-sized slices, then cutting the slices with a cookie cutter.
Each slice of cheese needs to be large enough to fit the entire cookie cutter. (I found one trick – if a particular slice is a little too small, you can gently flatten the slice with your hand to make it a little larger so you can accommodate a heart-shaped cookie cutter.)
Then I cut the tomatoes into thin slices and cut out the same number of mozzarella hearts. On each slice of tomato I put a mozzarella heart and a basil leaf, and sprinkled balsamic sauce on top.
