Cake 3 Recipes – Learn how to make a two- or three-layer 6-inch cake from any of your favorite cupcake or 8-inch cake recipes, including this 6-inch vanilla bean cake recipe. This size cake is perfect for small gatherings and 1st birthday cake smashes.
Depending on how long you’ve been a reader here, you may or may not know that I got into baking when I owned and ran my own cake and cupcake decorating business (you can read all about how that happened at my Meet Lynn page ).
Cake 3 Recipes
I’ve made a lot of cakes for birthday parties, bridal showers, and even weddings, and I’ve also made a lot of small cake recipes for first birthday parties and, believe it or not, a lot of 6 inch cakes for cupcake toppers.
Tres Leches Cake
It’s always been pretty easy to convert my standard 8 or 9 inch cake recipes to 6 inch cakes (or even sometimes 4 inch cakes!), and since I get a lot of questions about exactly how to make a 6 inch cake instead of an 8 or 9 inch cake, it seemed about time I put it all here for you (with a huge surprise at the bottom – the Skillshare course!).
While the recipe at the bottom of this tutorial is a vanilla cake recipe (especially a vanilla bean cake!), I’ve included lots of links to various cake and cupcake recipes to help you transform a 6 inch cake easily and well. you choose the best recipe for small cakes of the desired taste.
Standard cupcake recipes that yield 12 to 15 cupcakes are the perfect amount of batter (3 to 4 cups) for 6-inch cakes, regardless of whether they are
Of course, if you use the same amount of batter for two pans divided into three pans, your three layers will be slightly thinner than the two layers. It all depends on personal preferences and desired aesthetics.
Easy Birthday Cake Ideas
Here are two sets of cake pans filled with cake batter. On the left is my chocolate cake batter (recipe from my Easy Chocolate Cupcakes). On the right, my vanilla bean cake batter (recipe below, from my vanilla bean cupcakes).
A standard 8 (or 9) inch cake recipe makes about 6 to 8 cups of cake batter, which if cut in half equals the 3 to 4 cups of batter we talked about in the cupcake batter, which makes about Makes 12 to 15 cupcakes.
I don’t recommend cutting the frosting recipe in half, as you probably won’t have enough to completely cover the cake. If you want to reduce it at all, I would only reduce by ¼ of the recipe (so you would make ¾ of the suggested frosting recipe).
Two layers will take about 20-22 minutes and three layers will take about 18-20 minutes, baked at 350ºF (177ºC). Of course, this can vary by a few minutes depending on the particular dough you’re using, but in general, this is a good rule of thumb and a good place to start.
The Best Vanilla Cake Recipe!
I wasn’t always a round parchment paper user, but when I realized that the smaller 6 inch cakes (and 4 inch cakes!) were much harder to get out of the pans, I started using round parchment paper on them. I will occasionally use them for my 8 inch cakes, but not always.
Line the baking sheet on a sheet of parchment paper, then cut out circles and scrape them against the side of the table to line them up (parchment likes to curl, so scraping it down the side of the table like you would a crumpled dollar bill is incredibly helpful).
Next, lightly grease the bottom of a cake pan, then press a round of parchment onto the bottom of the pan.
Grease and flour the rest of the pan, including the parchment paper, or use my homemade cake pan. Now you are ready to remove the dough later and the beautiful layers of the baked cake!
Shortcut Tres Leches Cake Recipe: How To Make It
You’ll need about 3 cups of frosting to frost a three-layer 6-inch cake with the base rims (if you want to include them). As a rule of thumb, any frosting recipe that uses 1 cup of butter and about 4 to 5 cups of powdered sugar will provide enough frosting for your 6-inch cake + simple decorations.
Now that you have your cake layers, you can choose to simply stack them or fill them. Let’s start by assembling your cake without the filling.
It’s as simple as making sure the cake layers are flat, then stacking them by covering the surfaces with frosting between the cake layers.
The “filling” is really anything that isn’t the same frosting that’s on the outside of the cake. Here you can see with my black velvet cake exactly what the fountain is and what it looks like.

Creating a dimple seals the filling and prevents the filling from mixing with the outer glaze.
What is a crumb coat, you ask? This is a thin layer of frosting used to seal the cake layers together and lock in the crumbs. If you really want to know all about this crumb coat…
As I mentioned before, a 6 inch cake is a great option for a smaller gathering and you can get 8 decent slices out of this size cake. This of course can depend on how big or small your slices are, but this is a general guideline and works for a Goldilocks-sized slice of cake, even for kids.
I hope this post (and maybe my course) has prepared you well for making your next small birthday cake, a pastry cake for your child or another child you love, or simply understand how to easily adapt your favorite recipe for cake into a simple 6 inch cake recipe for whatever reason you need to eat cake (you don’t really need it, really).

Tres Leches (milk Cake) Recipe (with Video)
We love simple, crowd-pleasing desserts that come together in a casserole, like classic tiramisu, our favorite strawberry pretzel salad, and of course, this easy Tres Leches Cake. They are easy to make and perfect to bring to dinner parties and parties. They are well tolerated and always the first to disappear.
Tres Leches is a popular authentic Mexican cake. I’m a fan of moist cakes and this Tres Leches cake blew me away. The syrup is made from – you guessed it – tres leches (meaning three types of milk). Poke holes in the cake before pouring the syrup so that every bite is decadently moist. The cake is rich but has a light touch and is balanced by the slightly sweetened whipped cream. We even bravely turned it into a layered Tres Leches cake!
My cousin Katerina sent me this Tres Leches cake recipe (a long time ago) and I finally found the time to make it. It was adapted from Pioneer Woman.
This recipe calls for very simple ingredients, most of which are refrigerator and pantry staples. It has 3 types of milk poured over the cake: evaporated milk, heavy whipping cream and sweetened condensed milk. It is topped with a 2-ingredient whipped cream glaze. We like to add fresh berries such as strawberries and raspberries for a nicer presentation.

How long does tres leches cake last? The tres leches cake can be completely assembled and made 1 to 2 days in advance. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Add fresh strawberries just before serving, especially if the strawberries are sliced.
Is Tres Leches supposed to be wet? It should be very humid. The base of the cake is sponge cake, so it absorbs a generous amount of syrup without getting soggy. So I avoid using a boxed white cake mix that
