I just love “old fashioned” style dessert. These are what our grandmothers would do. Something about an old school recipe just feels special.

And even though this cake is probably not very old, it has some features in it that make it “old”.

Start with the apple butter cake. I used my favorite butter cake recipe, but replaced the brown sugar with maple, added apple butter, and replaced the butter with my favorite spiced apple cider. Thanks to apple butter and apple cider there are many delicious apple flavors.

Start by beating together the wet ingredients: butter, sugar, vanilla, apple butter, and eggs. Then, add the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Finally, whisk in the apple cider. Then bake and go.

As much as I love my original butter cake recipe, I actually love this cake a lot. The flavor is warm, rich, and sweet, but not too sweet. The cinnamon and apple notes are very nice.

. It’s just melted chocolate chips and sour cream. I also added espresso powder, which really brings out the chocolate.

With just three ingredients, this frosting is pretty magical. Very creamy, rich, and fudgy. And I love that it’s not too sweet.

Spread the frosting over one layer of the cake. Add the top layer, and cool the cake while you make the brown sugar caramel coating.

When melted, the brown sugar adds hints of warm molasses and really deepens the flavor to create a perfectly rich caramel-like crust. And if you add a touch of vanilla – it’s great. I highly recommend using more icing than you think your cake needs.

Make sure you pour on the icing while it’s still warm, as it cools it will harden.

Minute Gooey Vanilla Peach Mug Cake.

This last step is optional but very good, the caramel brulée candy. Simply melt the caster sugar on the stove until it turns a deep caramel color, then spread the caramel over the parchment paper.

Let sit for a few minutes and let the caramel harden. Then it can be easily broken into small pieces to sprinkle over the cake.

This cake is delicious. Each bite is filled with deliciously spiced apple, chocolate, and caramel. The best kind of autumn cake!

I think now we all know that when it comes to baking sweets, here, we tend to choose something chocolate. But, there are times throughout the winter when baking something bright and orange is all I want.

And caramel, and cookies, and chocolate, and eggnog, and…all things Christmas! I’m happy about it, but I’m sure you probably know that. 🙂 Here’s the truth, I’ve been baking Christmas stuff since the week before Thanksgiving. Actually, it was just a week before Thanksgiving when I made this cake and some cute little cupcakes to go with it. I remember because it was our first big snow of the season.

I can only say that baking gingerbread cookies on a snowy day is about the best day I could ask for. Right now, between today and December 25th is my favorite time of the year! I can’t get enough of it, and I wish it would last two months longer than it does. But with twenty-three days until Christmas I have plans to bake (and weather) a snowstorm, watch all the Christmas movies, shoot the cookbook photos, wrap all the presents, watch my brother compete in the Dew Tour (so I’m happy for him!), and spend time with my mom and little sister for us to change. How I will accomplish all this is beyond me, but I will, I will, and it will be amazing!
