I would stick with the dried ones as the fresh ones will be too soft and I think they would make the pastry soft.
If you want to omit the wine, I recommend sauteing the figs in apple cider. If you do this swap, I would leave out the honey (because rye is naturally sweeter than wine) and simmer longer because it will take longer to reduce the cider.

The delicious combo of tangy goat cheese, caramelized onions and figs is served with a warm sherry sauce, spread on baguette slices or crackers. It’s an easy recipe that can be assembled completely a day in advance. Party food at its best!
I love a party dish that you can make ahead, and this one can be completely prepared the day before. Ideally, assemble it in an oven-safe serving dish. Keep it overnight in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap. Bring it to room temperature and pop it in the oven 20 minutes before your guests arrive. When the party starts, it will be warm and ready to enjoy.
You can put the baked dish out on a trivet, surrounded by baguette slices, and let everyone serve themselves, or prepare a fig and goat’s cheese bruschetta and pass them around on a serving tray. No matter how you serve this dish, everyone eats it and likes it! If any of the fig and goat cheese mixture is left over the next day (unlikely!) spread it over a pizza crust for a delicious fig and goat cheese pizza.

It’s worth mentioning that when I first started writing this post, I saw on Facebook that it was National Fig Week, and I felt like I had an interesting hook to share. share my delicatessen and goat cheese. However, as I typed the words, “This is National Fig Week”, I stopped to consider the whole concept of a national week dedicated to… figures. Putting my blog post aside, I started researching: How is a food holiday determined? How official is it? Is there some kind of bureaucracy you have to endure or paperwork to file to create a food holiday or does anyone call it National Anything Week?
The answer to that last question is “yes.” There is no law that prevents anyone from naming their own holidays and many of the national food days we read about are clever marketing campaigns. There are some legit special food holidays though, like National Ice Cream Month, July, and National Ice Cream Day, the third Sunday in July. These were announced by Ronald Reagan and written into public law on July 2, 1984. One other official source for these special days and weeks is the Chase Calendar. a McGraw Hill publication that has been listing special events and holidays since 1957. Even if something starts as a marketing campaign, being listed with Chase’s Calendar is almost as good as getting President’s call.
Marketing campaigns or not, I love the designated meal weeks and holidays. They remind us of what’s in season and inspire us to cook something new. If you are interested, you can see the special American food holidays here, and by the way there is one for every day of the year.

That’s exactly what Spike said after he popped about a dozen of these in his mouth at my birthday pig roast potluck back in March. Yes, I know, DEATH.
