I don’t know about you, but I love outdoor fun when the weather is nice. We try to do as much as possible in Minnesota, where we all spend the winters together. It doesn’t even have to be a formal occasion. It might just be a bunch of parents gathering on the front porch as the kids hit the slide and slide and go back and forth through the sprinkler. So, more often than not, it tends to be a spontaneous gathering.

Spontaneity is often a BIG challenge for those of us on a low sodium diet. Many of our low-sodium meals are pre-planned, requiring some forethought about which low-sodium items to have on hand in the pantry. When I’ve talked about low sodium snacks before, I’ve reviewed all the low sodium crackers currently on the market. Nabisco (and their parent company Mondelez) should be commended for their commitment to reducing sodium in the foods they produce. They have created many of their favorite cracker brands in a “Hint of Salt” low sodium version.

Greek Salad Skewers (an Easy, Make Ahead Party Appetizer!)

I love a cracker that is sturdy and holds up to a variety of toppings without getting soggy. So for the low sodium snack idea I’m sharing today, I had to make sure we had the TRISCUIT Hint of Salt Crackers. I love that a major brand has low sodium options that can be found almost anywhere, like Walmart or another big chain. TRISCUIT Hint of Salt crackers have only 50 mg of sodium for a serving of six crackers. I also got the TRISCUIT Mediterranean Style Olive, which comparatively has 150mg for 5 crackers. Now we can gather the rest of our materials.

The first step is right outside my front door. We set up our potted herb garden across the front porch where visitors to our home can immediately catch the scent of mint, basil, rosemary and more. Grab six leaves to make chiffon for our Bruschetta topping. Be sure to wash them and let them dry while you prepare the rest. We also need olive oil, balsamic vinegar, plum tomatoes, an onion, black pepper, two cloves of garlic and some Marscapone cheese. Marscapone is a low sodium form of cream cheese and gives us a nice creamy base for our toppings.

Assembly is a breeze, so you can get back to the party. Cut the onion and tomatoes into 1/4-inch pieces and mix them in a small bowl. Chop the garlic cloves and add them. add the oil, balsamic vinegar and freshly ground black pepper. Give them a quick stir until smooth.

Cut the basil into small ribbons (chefs call this chiffon cutting) and sprinkle the ribbons over the tops.

These Cranberry Turkey Cocktails make perfect healthy holiday appetizers that you and your family will love!

Everyone has their family traditions when it comes to holiday entertaining, and for me, it’s all about the cocktail meatballs. Okay, so I grew up on grape jelly meatballs (made with frozen IKEA meatballs, of course), but once I was old enough to partake in the holiday spread, I was determined to get them. Sorry mom, but goodbye sugary jello and hello lean turkey meatballs packed with holiday flavors. Introducing Healthy Cranberry Turkey Cocktail Meatballs with Low Sodium Velvet Sauce.

These turkey cocktail meatballs start with high-fiber oats in place of traditional white breadcrumbs for a nutritional boost. I also use extra lean ground turkey (to keep the holiday vibe going) and toss it in with low calorie, high fiber mushrooms. Cranberries add a sweet bite, while rosemary and sage complete the festive feel.

But my Healthy Cranberry Turkey Cocktail Meatballs wouldn’t be complete without something fluffy and dreamy to dip, dip or smother them in. Can I take. Gravy is one of those many jobs I’m happy to leave to the experts. When taste matters (and let’s be honest, it’s the MOST important thing during the holidays), Club House Gravy Mixes are my go-to. It makes the otherwise stressful experience of entertaining much easier, more convenient and undeniably delicious.

Low Sodium Salsa Recipe (no Salt Added!)

For my turkey cranberry meatballs, I usually like to use 25% less salt turkey gravy, but you can also use their classic or gluten-free versions in the turkey, coffee, pork, or chicken gravy. I’m crazy about the stuff in its plain, unadulterated glory, but feel free to add extra meat drippings or some extra sage or rosemary to jazz it up.

What’s your favorite dip or sauce for cocktail meatballs? Have you tried these Healthy Cranberry Turkey Meatballs with Easy Gravy yet? Leave me a comment below with your thoughts!
