Ingredient Creamy Pasta Bake

If I told you that you could enjoy cheap baked pasta with less than 10 minutes of work time, would you believe me? Let me tell you, it is possible! For me, this is the most effective dinner. It’s easy enough to make when you’re in a pinch (don’t have time to meal prep, have to work late, etc.) but also satisfying enough to make just because.

What makes this pasta so easy to bake? It does not require any pre-cooking! You don’t have to boil pasta noodles, strain ground beef, or chop any vegetables. Instead, the noodles will be cooked in the oven, we used sliced and precooked Italian chicken sausage for protein, and frozen chopped spinach for extra veggies.

The key to making great recipes with simple ingredients is to make sure you use high quality ingredients to begin with. Here’s what you need to make this easy pasta bake:

Once you have all your ingredients together, all you have to do is stir them together in the pan – you won’t have to mess up another dish! Here’s what to do:

Macaroni Pasta Bake

Yes, this pasta bake will freeze great! If you want to freeze the whole pasta bake, we recommend baking it in a freezer-safe container (like this one ) for 40 minutes but skipping the last baking step. Instead, after baking for 40 minutes, you’ll stir in the spinach, top with cheese, then let it sit for about an hour before covering and freezing. When you’re ready to reheat it, bake for 40 minutes, covered, in a 350°F oven, then and additional 15-20 minutes uncovered, until the cheese is browned and bubbly.

If you want to freeze individual portions, simply bake the pasta completely, then place in a freezer-safe container. You can reheat individual portions by microwave for 3-4 minutes, or by baking at 350°F for about 20 minutes.

This is a great way to use up leftover rotisserie chicken, or in Australia what we call BBQ Chicken – don’t know why because it’s not grilled! I have also used smoked meat, you can taste the extra flavor from the smoke through the whole dish. Yum. Plus, who doesn’t love creamy pasta bread?

Sausage Pasta Bake

Easy Creamy Chicken Pasta – leftover chicken, smoked meat and pasta covered in a simple 2-ingredient cheese sauce

As for the pasta I chose, I have made this dish with ziti (or penne) pasta. I’ve also made it with the shells, and frankly they taste the same of course because it’s all still pasta.

The reason I only add a little salt to the pasta water is because the bacon itself can be salty – and we all know that when you have too much salt, it’s hard to fix! I find that this is enough salt for me. If you feel like you want to add more, I would taste it right before it goes into the pan then add it later if you want.

As a food blogger, it’s sometimes embarrassing to admit that my kids aren’t the pickiest of eaters. And by that, I mean they’re picky.

Although it gets better as they get older, we still struggle sometimes. But there are some things that they will all eat almost every time. Homemade pizza. meatballs. Tacos. And pasta.

But really – what’s not to like (for the whole family) in this dish? Meaty, creamy red sauce, pasta, and lots and lots of cheese. This is a comfort food I’ll get behind any day of the week.

Easy Sausage Pasta Bake Recipe

Ground Beef: I like to use lean ground beef so I don’t have a lot of grease or fat. To get more flavor, feel free to reduce some of the ground beef for the sausage.

Marinara Sauce: Make sure you use a marinara sauce that you really like. Do not use straight ketchup, because the flavor will be lacking. I like to use a marinara sauce that has lots of Italian spices in it.

Sour Cream: This is what makes the dish creamy. You can technically leave it out, but you’ll lose the creamy aspect, and that’s one of the things I love most about this recipe!

Provolone, Mozzarella, and Parmesan: Yes, it’s cheesy, and maybe that’s why my kids love it so much! I like a mixture of all three cheeses. And I love using sliced Provolone – I think it makes it cheesier!

Broccoli Pasta Bake

PASTA: Cook your pasta until al dente. You don’t want to overcook it, or it will be mushy when it’s all combined and baked.

SAUCE: To make the sauce, cook the ground beef with the onions, then add the marinara and let everything cook and simmer. Add sour cream.

ASSEMBLE: To assemble, you will have 2 layers of meat/pasta and cheese. Start by adding half of the pasta to your baking dish. Top with half of the provolone, (tear off pieces, if necessary), then half of the mozzarella. Add remaining pasta, then remaining provolone, mozzarella, then parmesan.

Gluten Free Baked Pasta With Cheese

SUBSTITUTION: For more flavor, use half ground beef and half Italian sausage. Any shortcut pasta can be used in place of penne – penne is just our favorite!

FREEZE: This casserole freezes well. You can assemble the entire dish, then cover and freeze either before or after baking. Either way, make sure it’s completely cooled before freezing. Let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator before baking. Leftovers can be frozen in individual portions, too, and reheated in the microwave for easy meals. I wouldn’t recommend microwaving if it’s bigger than one portion, though.
