Rock Cake Recipes – What a fun name these cute simple cakes have. I’m sure they got their name because they look like rocks, not because they’re rock hard! Anyway, if I remember correctly, the first one I ever cooked was probably rock cakes.
Because my dad was a baker, my mom never baked cakes at home. Although my mother wasn’t a very good cook (I know this from my father), she made a fantastic pie and mean Yorkshire pudding.

Perhaps because I was too young to be allowed into the bakery itself at the time, I remember the first time I baked something for a Brownie badge. I can still picture the kitchen at Brown Owl’s house and the end results, but I will remember for the rest of my life who taught us how to make them.
Easy Traditional Rock Cake Recipe
Every now and then I make them again, just because they are so quick and easy to make, and they taste good.
Somewhere between a bun and a cookie, it takes about 10 minutes to weigh all the ingredients, mix and form.
Then into the oven for about 15 minutes to bake. Perfect when you’re in the mood for a quick tasty snack or, in my case, a trip back in time.
Traditionally prepared with sultanas and a mixed crust, I gave it a more modern twist by adding dried cranberries and blueberries.

It is a small cake with a rough stone-like surface. They were promoted by the British Ministry of Food during the Second World War because they require fewer eggs and less sugar than regular cakes, an important saving in times of strict rationing. Traditional recipes filled them with oatmeal, which was more readily available than white flour.

Typically, flour and butter are mixed first until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs; The remaining ingredients are then added to make a stiff dough, which is spooned onto a baking sheet or roughly shaped with two forks. Bake the cookies (or sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon) for about 15 minutes at 200-220°C,
Variations include Jamaican stone cake, which is similar but usually contains grated coconut, and traditional British stone cake, which contains oatmeal.

Author Agatha Christie mentions stone cakes in her short stories and novels, including Three Blind Mice and The Murder at the Vicarage. Detective Alan Grant receives rock rolls in Josephine Tey’s novel The Daughter of Time.
They are also a frequent feature of the popular Harry Potter series of books and movies. For example, Hagrid serves stone cakes to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley at tea in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Unfortunately, his rockcakes are hard to gnash on, and he politely discards them (and other examples of his cooking) in later stories.
At the beginning of The African Que, Mr. Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) is given a cookie during tea time. Stone cakes are also mentioned in an early scene of the movie Goodbye Mr. Chips from 1939. They are mentioned as an alternative to doughnuts in the 1940 British film Night Train to Munich.

I love rock cakes! It’s a nice recipe. I like the spice combination. I included candied lemon zest and almond flakes in the recipe. Sprinkling with Demerara sugar before baking added a satisfying crunch. Other times I added almond flakes as a sprinkle instead! ☺️

Good Old Rock Cakes
Despite the name seeming a little uninviting, rockcakes are simply the easiest British baked goods to make, and they’re delicious, too.
Named for their shape and stony surface, they are also known as rock rolls, depending on where you live in the UK. They were especially popular during World War II because they required less sugar and eggs than traditional cake recipes; they were a good baking project while rationing.
The croissants are made from a simple dough of self-rising flour, baking powder, butter, sugar, milk and egg, stuffed with dried fruit, rolled into balls and baked. Oatmeal is sometimes added.
