Since the beginning of the New Year, I have made it a goal to make dinner at home more. The holidays have been crazy and it’s so nice to settle down a bit. Honey, garlic, soy sauce and butter. Seriously my favorite flavors in one. I use them in so many recipes because they are just so good!! It is easy to make and the taste is incredible. It coats the shrimp perfectly, creating a tasty and sticky sauce! But my favorite part is that this dish was ready in less than 30 minutes. You can have amazing meals for your family at night that require minimal effort but are restaurant quality. The most common types of shrimp in the markets are pink or white shrimp, both of which work well in this recipe. Make sure you choose large sized shrimp, look for 16 to 20 pieces (or pieces) per pound. This will ensure that the prawns do not overcook quickly when sautéing.

The jumbo size also provides a nice two-piece for a heartier appetizer. Feel free to remove the tails to make it easier to eat. You can also use frozen shrimp, run them under cold water until the ice melts, or thaw them the night before and drain them well.

When the shrimp is no longer pink in color and is more of an opaque white color, I would consider them done. You want to watch how white they are and make sure they don’t overcook.

Watching the shrimp shrink in size is also a great way to keep track of how “done” your shrimp are. I like to leave the tails on when cooking the shrimp. Adds extra flavor; however, if you prefer to peel whole shrimp or buy them that way, that’s fine too.

The outside of the shrimp should be pink with red tails and the flesh is slightly opaque and a little “white” in color. If it is too bright white in color, the shrimp may be overcooked.

Overcooked shrimp always tend to be chewy and rubbery. So if your shrimp are rubbery, then you overcooked them. Prawns cook quickly and do not take much time to cook. It only takes about 2-3 minutes per side. Once the shrimp curls and turns pink, they are cooked and ready.

The quick answer is yes. You can cook pre-cooked shrimp that you bought in the store. They usually come frozen, so thaw them first. We recommend using raw shrimp, as they will turn out to be juicier and tastier. You will run the risk of rubbery shrimp when you cook boiled shrimp.

To store leftover Cajun shrimp, place in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can freeze cooked Cajun shrimp for up to 3 months. When ready to serve, thaw in the refrigerator or reheat in the microwave.
