Although apple pie has been a traditional American staple during holidays like Thanksgiving, the buttery dish actually originated in England.
Puff pastry was accidentally created by French pastry apprentice Claudius Gele in the 17th century. He added too much butter to his bread dough, resulting in the loaf’s unusual shape and patchy texture.
Sugar cookies were invented by 18th-century Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and used to be called Nazareth cookies.
And the chocolate brownie was born in Chicago, Illinois, inside the iconic Palmer House Hotel. Bertha Palmer, whose husband owned the hotel, asked the kitchen chefs to bake a portable dessert that she could take to the Columbian Exposition World’s Fair in 1893. This led to the gooey, fudge-filled treat we call the brownie.

Who doesn’t crave a wonderful, decadent dessert, especially after dinner? The name itself comes from the French word “desservir”, which in English means “to clear away”, in this case the food from the dinner table. And depending on where you are in the world, that can mean a variety of after-dinner sweets. In China, it may contain sweet red beans or dates. In Mexico, flan can be on the menu.
In the US, the sweeter the dessert, the better. In fact, Americans may not have created some of the most popular desserts out there, but they have become known for putting their spin on several of the classics. Although you might think that the cheesecake started in New York, its origins go back to ancient Greece and the island of Samos. Anthropologists have found cheese molds there dating back to around 2000 BC. and the first recipe for Greek cheesecake is attributed to the writer Athenaeus in 230 A.D. But it was Americans who added cream cheese to the cake in 1872. A dairy farmer in New York accidentally created what we now know as Philadelphia Cream Cheese while trying to re-create French Neufchatel. Although there are seemingly unlimited varieties of cheesecake, New York-style cheesecake uses cream cheese along with eggs, cream, sugar, and usually a graham cracker crust. It is served plain without other ingredients or toppings.

Cupcakes aren’t just for kids anymore. And if you want a dessert fix all your own, head to your nearest gourmet muffin shop. Americans are fascinated by cupcakes – and cupcake bakeries – and it’s easy to see why. They’re tiny, awesome pint versions of every cookie flavor you can think of.
You can expect to find everything from traditional vanilla and chocolate to more exotic flavors like Key lime pie, red velvet and cookies ‘n’ cream. Of course, you don’t have to go to a gourmet store to get them. You can also make perfect cupcakes at home using a muffin tin and decorative paper liners.

There’s always room for Jell-O. At least that’s what the dessert’s vintage famous advertising slogan says. Jell-O is actually a brand, but it’s become synonymous with any gelatin dessert, and there’s an undeniably fun appeal to the jiggle. It’s easy to do and requires virtually no cleanup. All you have to do is add boiling water to the powdered mixture and refrigerate for a few hours.
Here’s something you might not know: Gelatin is a processed version of collagen, a natural protein found in the tendons, ligaments and tissues of mammals. It is made by boiling the connective tissue, bones and hides of animals. And yes, that’s what the Jell-O brand is made of, too. Take the powdered gelatin, add some artificial sweetener and food coloring, and you have a very popular dessert. Chalk one up for the advertising industry.

Ah, carrot cake. Not only is it equal parts creamy and delicious, it’s also probably the best dessert to choose when you want to trick yourself into thinking you’re healthy. Carrots are good for you, so carrot cake can’t be that bad, right? Well, not so much.
Popularized in the United States in the mid-20th century, carrot cake is a delicious mix of sweet and savory cake topped with cream cheese frosting (made from cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract). Like many desserts, carrot cake can be made using a traditional recipe or dressed up with extras like macadamia nuts, pineapple, and coconut.
Of course, if fat and calories are an issue, you can easily lighten it up by making a few simple adjustments, like reducing the amount of sugar and oil and adding crushed pineapple to preserve moisture. Still, no matter what you do, it will be hard to call carrot cake a healthy dessert, but it will always be tasty.

Argentinian Desserts No One Can Turn Down
Nothing says America like baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. But apple pie wasn’t even created in the United States.
Apple pies or tarts go all the way back to Europe in the 14th century. The first apple pie dates from 1390, and honey was used instead of the rarely used sugar. In the 18th century, the pie became quite popular in Great Britain and was brought over to the new American colonies. Apple pie was regularly featured in American cookbooks in the 18th century, but the famous ala mode version, topped with vanilla ice cream, didn’t come into vogue until 19th century New York.
Because of the “red, white and blue” connotations, you can find apple pie on picnic tables across the country every Fourth of July when Americans celebrate their independence from England. The two most popular versions of the dessert are the traditional flakey crust variety and the Dutch, or crumb, apple pie. Most people prefer it fresh and hot from the oven, but frozen apple pies are also big sellers; just ask Sara Lee.
